TPC Prestancia, a 36 hole private golf and picturesque social club located in the beautiful Palmer Ranch area of Sarasota, Florida, announced that their Head Golf Professional and Golf Course Superintendent have been selected by the North Florida PGA, Southwest Chapter for the Bill Strausbaugh and Golf Course Superintendent of the Year Awards respectively.
Kevin Swan, who has been the Head Pro for over two years at TPC Prestancia, has been selected by his peers in the PGA Section Chapter to receive the Bill Strausbaugh Award. The award is designed to recognize PGA Professionals who by their day to day efforts have distinguished themselves by mentoring their fellow PGA Professionals in improving their employment situations and through service to their community.
“Thank you to all of my fellow golf professionals for the nomination,” said Kevin. “It is truly an honor to be recognized among so many great professionals. Mr. Strausbaugh was a wonderful mentor to so many and to receive this award that is dedicated in his memory is humbling.”
Mike McNamara has been the Superintendent of TPC Prestancia for four years. In his position, he is responsible for directing the agronomic and landscaping program for the Club with an intense focus on elevating the playability and aesthetics of the golf facilities on a daily basis.
The Superintendent of the Year Award is designed to recognize the person whose contributions to the club show exceptional commitment of passion, time and resources to provide the best playing conditions and conservation practices.
“I am honored to be nominated for the Superintendent of the Year Award.” said Mike. I want to reassure everyone at TPC Prestancia that the golf course maintenance staff is committed to continuously improving the course conditions.”
In addition to McNamara’s normal work load, Mike will be overseeing the extensive renovations of the Club Course in 2017. Updates will include a new irrigation system, re-grassing of greens with Champion Bermuda, leveling of tees, bunker enhancements and re-grassing of fairways with Celebration Bermuda and restoration of the original fairway contours. These improvements are designed to make the Member experience the best it could be. It will be closed from May until October.
“The upcoming renovations will reinvigorate the Club Course and restore its unique character,” said Bob Holzman, General Manager. “The work will improve course conditions, playability, and pace of play delivering a completely new look and feel while providing unmatched club offerings in the Sarasota area.”
The Club Course, a 1987 championship design by Robert Von Hagge, with PGA TOUR player Bruce Devlin as consultant, is an 6600 yard eclectic grouping of holes with great oaks lining the fairways, classic doglegs and carries over water that make it a suitable challenge for the most skilled players. Fortunately for members, children and newbies, there are 12 tee options to make it family friendly.
Our friend Ron (Mr. Florida) Garl designed the Stadium Course with PGA TOUR player Mike Souchak as consultant in 1985. The par 72 layout was fashioned after the TPC Network’s Flagship course, TPC Sawgrass, home to the Player’s Championship, and allows for maximum gallery enjoyment from the many hills dotting the broad fairways. The 6900 yard Stadium course is a little more forgiving than the Club but the undulating greens will be the challenge here.
The two beautiful courses sprawl out over 565 acres of lush landscaping, providing a balance of aesthetics and spectacular coastal wildlife. TPC Prestancia is designated as an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary as well as the courses being Certified Golf Sanctuaries by meeting required standards for protecting the environment, conserving natural resources and creating a wildlife habitat. In addition, being a good steward of the planet is an important aspect of the Prestancia lifestyle. In partnership with Sarasota County TPC Prestancia has been deemed it a ‘Green Business Partner’ since 2008. TPC Prestancia is a member of the Tournament Players Club Network and the Heritage Golf Group collection of properties.
