Heritage Oaks Golf and Country Club recently hosted a charity golf event to benefit All Faiths Food Bank’s Veterans’ Mobile Pantry which provides food to needy veterans and their families in the Sarasota/Bradenton area. The golf tournament consisted of a full field of 144 golfers and was followed by a gourmet dinner attracting 182 golfers and guests who participated in silent and live fundraising auctions.
“This year we made the decision to support needy veterans right here in our community” said Veterans’ Fundraising Committee Chair Phil Hoffman. “Due to the generosity of our members, guests and sponsors we are so pleased that the event has raised more than $34,000, 93% of which goes directly to providing food for our local veterans. This donation will enable All Faiths Food Bank to fund the Veteran’s Pantry program in its entirety for four months”, Hoffman added.
Heritage Oaks has a rich tradition of charitable giving having sponsored past events for the Susan B. Komen at Rally for the Cure, Men Against Prostate Cancer, and Wounded Warriors Family Support. In addition, this season the members of Heritage Oaks also raised more than $35,000 to support All Faiths Food Bank’s Backpack Program which provides weekend food for needy children in the Sarasota area.
All Faiths Food Bank has been serving veterans for more than five years through its Mobile Veterans’ Pantry, a twice-monthly distribution that provides fresh produce, meat, bread, and dry goods to former members of the U.S. military. Since there are 12,000 veterans in the Sarasota area who are either disabled or live below the national poverty threshold, there is a pronounced need to support them. In 2016, 3164 veterans and their families received 277,495 pounds of food, with 52,554 pounds being garden fresh produce through the Pantry.
“The All Faiths Food Bank, with the support of generous donors like Heritage Oaks members and their sponsors, subsidize the Veterans’ Mobile Pantry 100%, so there is no cost to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs for food or delivery”, said Aundria Castleberry, Director of Donor Relations at All Faiths Food Bank.
Heritage Oaks Golf and Country Club is a gated community of 850 members and enjoys a just-renovated 18-hole golf course, an award-winning Pro Shop, four lighted Har-Tru tennis courts and a total of 5 community swimming pools, including an Olympic pool and hot tub at the Clubhouse. The Club is also Audubon-Certified with over 60 species of birds making Heritage Oaks their home.
“We are so proud to be part of this wonderful community”, said Hoffman.
