It was almost like a Sarasota-Bradenton reunion at this past weekend’s Memorial, the PGA Tour stop at Dublin, Ohio.
Three of the top five finishers, including playoff winner Bryson DeChambeau, spent considerable time in the area.
The Memorial, designed by Jacki Nicklaus, isn’t the first Nicklaus course where DeChambeau found success.
In 2015, DeChambeau, playing for SMU, won the NCAA Championship at The Concession in east Manatee County.
The Concession was co-designed by Nicklaus and Tony Jacklin, who now resides in Manatee County.
On Sunday afternoon, DeChambeau edged Ben An with a birdie on the second playoff hole for his second PGA Tour victory.
An tutored at IMG Academy in Bradenton before winning the 2009 U.S. Amateur at 17-years-old. At the time, An practiced at The Concession. After winning the U.S. Am, the club members hosted a party for him.
Like An, Peter Uihlein, who finished fifth at The Memorial, spent his junior golf years at IMG and played many tournaments at The Concession. Uihlein moved up the leaderboard on Sunday by firing a 66, the second best score of the day.
It appears we will be hearing from these former area guests for a long time.
